On life getting in the way of fitness progress…
by Steve
Of the recurring themes on The Biggest Loser, there is one I never seem to tire of. That is when the contestants face the challenges of incorporating their new fitness-aware lifestyle into the real world of work, family demands and other interruptions. Interruptions that make it difficult to maintain their previously steady progress.
Perhaps it’s because this is the biggest challenge I’ve faced time and time again. Perhaps it’s just because I have a sick and twisted anticipation for pain and failure. That failure rarely comes though, so I think it’s because it fuels my hope that I can still get it right.
I’ve long known that I lack a certain discipline. Even when I think I’ll never go back ‘there’ again (wherever there happens to be), there’s always a variation on the theme that gets me right back there. The “new and improved” me invariably goes to war with the “been there, done that” me and in the ensuing battle, I fall prey too easily to the self-critical barbs thrown by the “been there, done that” me.
This is why seeing batches upon batches of others go through the adversity and come through with generally positive results fuels “new and improved” me to not give up, to give it another shot, and to succeed in the end.
